School District U-46 is a public K-12 district that serves portions of 11 communities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, spanning Cook, DuPage, and Kane Counties. Covering about 90 square miles, it operates 38 elementary schools, eight middle schools, and five high schools, making it the second largest district in Illinois by scale. The district serves nearly 35,000 students and is based in Elgin, Illinois. Its mission centers on creating a setting where students can learn, teachers can teach, and all employees can contribute, reflecting an emphasis on inclusive participation. In recent years, U-46 has advanced community partnerships and strategic planning through the Unite U-46 initiative, including collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club to support remote learning and after-school programming, and it has pursued a site for a new elementary school by acquiring the David C. Cook Publishing House property in Elgin.
