About Seattle Roots Community Health Seattle Roots Community Health is a mission-driven, not-for-profit health organization providing high-quality, accessible care to individuals and families across Seattle. We operate two primary care clinics, an After-Hours Clinic, two School-Based Health Centers, a low-barrier medication-assisted treatment clinic, and a dental clinic. Our roots run deep in community activism and health justice. Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center was founded in 1970 by the Seattle Chapter of the Black Panther Party to address health disparities in the Central District. Country Doctor Community Clinic was established in 1971 by Capitol Hill residents, supported by grassroots organizers, to improve access to care. In 1988, the two clinics united to expand their impact and better serve the region. In 2024, the organization adopted the name Seattle Roots Community Health to reflect its continued growth and the expansion of services and locations supporting Seattle’s diverse communities. We remain committed to health equity and our founding principle of community empowerment. Every day, our actions are guided by our mission: to improve the health of our community by providing high-quality, caring, culturally appropriate primary health care that addresses the needs of people—regardless of their ability to pay. At Seattle Roots Community Health, we believe health care is a right, not a privilege. We are passionate about serving patients of all backgrounds and are committed to building a diverse, compassionate, and culturally responsive team that reflects the communities we serve.
