SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals is a nonprofit organization that provides safe, affordable lodging for people traveling to UNC Hospitals for treatment of serious health conditions. Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the facility also offers meals, supportive programs, transportation, and a nurturing support network to help guests cope with their medical journeys. Guests include patients and their families facing illnesses or injuries such as cancer, organ or stem cell transplant, life-threatening burns, traumatic injuries, severe eating disorders, postpartum depression, and more, with the house aiming to offer rest, recovery, and a sense of connection during treatment. Since 2008, the organization has hosted more than 33,000 guests from all North Carolina counties, 44 states, and multiple countries. In response to demand, the house expanded to 75 guest rooms and suites, up from 40, and features common areas such as a Great Room with a fireplace and a large kitchen intended to foster spaces for guests to form friendships and networks of support. The operation emphasizes community and relies on the assistance of donors and volunteers to sustain its services.
