STAR is a Louisiana-based nonprofit in the field of individual and family services that supports youth and adult survivors of sexual trauma and works to strengthen community responses to sexual violence. Originating in Baton Rouge in 1975 as the Stop Rape Crisis Center, a division of the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office, the organization rebranded to STAR in 2012 to broaden services and maintain client confidentiality as an independent nonprofit. The program serves a broad spectrum of survivors, including children who have experienced sexual abuse, adults who were abused as children, and people who have faced harassment, sexual battery, or assault.

STAR has expanded its geographic reach beyond its home city, opening a New Orleans office in 2016 to serve Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Tammany Parishes, and later extending services to Alexandria to cover Avoyelles, Grant, Rapides, and Vernon Parishes. It has been recognized for its legal program, receiving the Louisiana Bar Association’s Legal Services Innovation Award in 2017. In 2021, STAR partnered with LSU to develop training for faculty and staff as part of Title IX-related education and policy efforts.
