The Shanti Project is a San Francisco-based nonprofit that provides emotional and practical support to people living with life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Charles Garfield at the UCSF Cancer Institute, it was among the first organizations to work with terminally ill individuals and later became a pioneer in community-based HIV/AIDS care. Each year, Shanti serves more than 2,200 clients through a collaboration of staff and volunteers who offer companionship and practical assistance. Over the years, the organization has trained more than 18,000 Bay Area volunteers and about 600 organizations worldwide in its Peer Support model, with volunteers contributing millions of hours of support to cancer and HIV/AIDS patients in San Francisco. Its work aims to improve the quality of life, health, and well-being for people facing life-threatening illness. In September 2023, Shanti announced a collaboration with Tales of the Kitty to provide in-home cat care in partnership with PAWS.
