Held annually in Sheffield each June, it provides a forum for filmmakers and audiences to engage in inspiration, debate, and development, while offering opportunities for learning and challenging ideas. The festival's programming reflects core values of creativity, empathy, freedom, inclusivity, and internationalism.

Operated by International Documentary Festival Sheffield, the organization is an independent registered charity dedicated to advancing the art and education of documentary filmmaking. Based in Sheffield, England, it supports a major event with its 32nd edition scheduled for 18-23 June 2025, including the MeetMarket pitching platform on 19-20 June 2025. In 2026 the festival announced GEN DocFest, a new family strand designed to welcome audiences of all ages, reflecting ongoing efforts to broaden accessibility and audience engagement.
