Sigma Delta Tau is a national not-for-profit sorority aligned with the Greek-letter system and a member of the National Panhellenic Conference. It originated at Cornell University on March 25, 1917, when seven Jewish women established the organization to create an inclusive space. The headquarters are in Carmel, Indiana, where professional staff coordinate operations and a national board of directors provides governance. A broad network of alumnae volunteers and traveling Leadership Consultants support chapters across the country. Its affiliated foundation, founded in 1963 as a separate not-for-profit, supports collegians and alumnae with educational initiatives and leadership programming, administered by a staff director, volunteers, and trustees. In recent years, Sigma Delta Tau refreshed its branding, launching Shine As One with a new visual identity in 2024, and continues to recognize academic achievement through its Order of the Lapis scholastic society.
