SOFTlab is a design studio based in New York City, founded by Michael Szivos. The practice pursues a research-driven approach that probes how technology, craft, and materials come together to push the boundaries between architecture, other disciplines, and public life. The team describes itself as a diverse mix of artists, listeners, geeks, dreamers, teachers, believers, programmers, and architects, united by curiosity and a shared interest in rethinking how people engage with the world. Its work starts with examining contextual conditions and translating dynamic site phenomena into interventions that become an extension of what already exists, rather than a literal copy. By fostering active engagement with people on site, the firm aims for projects that are unexpected yet appropriate as they unfold.
