The South Carolina Philharmonic is an independent nonprofit organization registered as a 501(c)(3) and based in Columbia, South Carolina, founded in 1964. It performs and promotes professional symphonic music to meet the community’s needs for cultural development, education, entertainment and tourism. Since 2008/2009, under Music Director Morihiko Nakahara, the ensemble has pursued higher artistic standards and established itself as the Midlands region’s leading performing arts group. The orchestra engages with local audiences through initiatives such as the music in my neighborhood pilot program launched in 2024. In 2026, the organization added two community leaders to its Board of Directors, strengthening governance and civic engagement. With a mid-sized staff, the group continues to operate from its Columbia base, focusing its activities in the Midlands.
