The South County Art Association (SCAA) promotes greater participation in the visual arts by encouraging the production, visibility, and appreciation of art work through quality education, juried and organized exhibitions, and artistic fellowship. The organization is comprised of artists and community members who attend classes, lectures, and exhibits in the gallery space in the organization's historic property in Kingston, RI. It is a membership organization but all classes and exhibits are open to the public. The gallery, gift shop, and administrative offices are located on the first floor of Helme House, a historic building (c.1810) which also houses nine artists' studios. The pottery and class studios are located next door in a what used to be Kingston's schoolhouse, c.1759. The organization owns and maintains both of the buildings, offering over a hundred classes a year in pottery, painting, drawing, stone carving and more during the year. SCAA stages exhibits 10 times each year featuring both members and juried work from the public in a variety of media. SCAA also holds a huge annual sale in December featuring the work of the artist members, and is attended by thousands in the greater Rhode Island community who come to buy gifts of art, pottery, jewelry and more. SCAA is overseen by a Board of Directors and employs an executive director, exhibits director, assistant, and a studio manager/caretaker.
