Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) is a public entity reporting to the Minister for Health, purposed with providing cemetery, cremation, and related support services to the community on the government’s behalf.

Formed in March 2010 under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003, SMCT is accountable to the Department of Health and administers 11 cemeteries and memorial parks across southern metropolitan Melbourne.

SMCT is responsible for the care and long term maintenance of these distinctive locations. To ensure they are preserved for future generations, a percentage of revenue is allocated to a Preservation Fund, which provides resources to maintain all sites in perpetuity.

Beyond the funeral services we provide, we are committed to guiding families through some of the most important long term decisions they will make when someone dies.

We also recognise our responsibilities as custodians of history. Historic and iconic, the cemeteries and memorial parks in our care are beautiful, tranquil and distinctive places to honour and celebrate life.
