Southern Region EMS Council, a nonprofit organization formed in 1975, serves as a regional resource hub for emergency medical services in southcentral and southwestern Alaska. Headquartered in Anchorage, it operates within the health care sector to coordinate EMS activities and support the regional EMS network. The council’s service area spans about 192,369 square miles and extends over 2,000 miles from Cordova in the east to Attu Island in the west, overseeing more than 100 ambulance and first responder providers. Communities served include a mix of small villages and larger towns, with populations ranging from 25 to 275,000, and two-thirds of these communities are very remote and lack road access to the rest of the state.
