The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, located in Abingdon and serving the Southwest Virginia region, was founded in 1991 to bolster the area’s economy through education and workforce training. Through a partnership with ten colleges and universities, it provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs and professional development courses mainly for adult learners. The center also contributes to regional economic development by operating a conference facility, offering business support services, and applying technology to educational needs. In March 2026, the center opened a new Regional Simulation Lab designed to advance healthcare education and workforce development across the region. It has pursued collaborative initiatives such as the Healthcare Excellence Academy Lab School in partnership with Emory & Henry University and supports community and campus events as part of its local engagement.
