SouthWings is a non-profit conservation organization founded in 1996 that coordinates a network of volunteer pilots to support ecosystem restoration and protection in the Southeast through flight. The group conducts flights to educate community leaders, policymakers, and the media, and to collect scientific data on forests, watersheds, historic landmarks, and the region’s biodiversity, operating from its base in Asheville, North Carolina, with a satellite office in New Orleans. Serving partners and collaborators across civic and environmental arenas, SouthWings aims to document and advocate for the Southeast’s globally significant ecosystems by documenting conditions from the air and supporting environmental decision‑making. In the broader field of aviation-based conservation, the organization aligns with peer groups that mobilize volunteer pilots to aid conservation, education, and environmental monitoring efforts.
