SpaceIL is an Israeli nonprofit organization in the aviation and aerospace field focused on science education and outreach. It was founded in 2011 by Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari, and Yonatan Winetraub to tackle the Google Lunar XPRIZE challenge of building, launching, and landing an unmanned spacecraft on the Moon. In 2019, SpaceIL achieved a milestone by reaching the Moon with the Beresheet-1 mission, marking Israel as the seventh country to accomplish such a feat and positioning SpaceIL as the first private entity to reach the lunar surface. The organization is based in Tel Aviv and operates with a relatively small team while pursuing a follow-on space mission and continued educational activities. SpaceIL's work centers on promoting science and education, with programs and activities that extend beyond Israel to engage learners globally. A recent development is the SpaceUP educational program launched in 2024, which has been adopted by around 15 classrooms nationwide. The nonprofit continues planning its next space mission while maintaining its educational outreach to inspire future scientists, engineers, and explorers.
