Spaces of Hope, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in the architecture and planning field that aims to promote architecture and design in economically challenged areas and distressed communities. Founded in 2012 by four University of Kansas architecture students, the organization pursues this mission by fostering creative, thoughtful design and progressive architecture within education, and by engaging educational institutions and public spaces through its activities.
Based in Lawrence, Kansas, Spaces of Hope operates through two design competitions, one for high school students and one for collegiate participants, to stimulate planning and design understanding while contributing to the improvement of surrounding institutions and communities. The collegiate division directly supports the organization’s goals by funding a winning design that is built at its proposed site, with support from sponsors and donors to advance educational and community outcomes.
