Special Olympics Canada is the Canadian chapter of the international Special Olympics movement, a nonprofit organization founded in 1969 and based in Toronto, Ontario. It aims to enrich the lives of Canadians with intellectual disabilities by providing sport-based programming and opportunities for community involvement. Through grassroots sport clubs across almost every province and territory, excluding Nunavut, it operates year-round programs that serve a broad age range and seek to advance inclusion beyond competition. The organization relies on a large volunteer network—more than 19,000 volunteers, including over 14,000 trained coaches—supporting more than 40,000 registered participants. In 2026, Kelowna was named the host city for the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games 2028.
