Special Olympics New Zealand is a small nonprofit organization based in Petone, in the Wellington region, operating within the spectator sports sector. It coordinates year-round sports training and competitive opportunities across a range of Olympic-style sports for people of all ages who have an intellectual disability. The program aims to improve physical fitness, foster self-confidence, bring moments of joy, and create opportunities for participants to share gifts, skills, and friendships with families, other athletes, and the wider community. In 2025, Special Olympics New Zealand helped launch the Wider Auckland Intellectual Disability Inclusive Badminton programme, a collaboration with Badminton Oceania and Badminton North Harbour designed to expand inclusive sport opportunities.
