Special Olympics Texas coordinates year-round sports training and Olympic-style competition for more than 58,800 children and adults with intellectual disabilities, helping participants improve physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and connect with families and the broader community. The program offers 22 sports and hosts more than 300 competitions annually across area, regional, and state levels, with divisions by age, gender and ability to provide an equal chance to win. The organization is based in San Antonio, Texas, operates as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and is organized into four regions with 19 area offices. Volunteering is central to Special Olympics Texas, with more than 36,3750 volunteers in Texas and more than 3,900 volunteer coaches serving as coaches, officials, and competition aides. Athletes may begin training as early as six years old, must be eight to compete, and statewide competitions are open to participants aged 12 and older; the Young Athletes Program, launched in 2005, allows children ages two through seven to participate as Athletes in Training where available. In March 2026, SOTX Events announced a partnership with El Paso Children's Hospital to advance community engagement.
