The Squamish Nation, also known as Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, functions as an Indigenous government that oversees governance, protection, and services for its territory and people. Based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, its membership is just over four thousand, with about 47% living on-reserve and the remainder in urban reserve communities across Vancouver, North and West Vancouver, and Squamish. The Nation maintains that it has never ceded or surrendered title to its lands, rights to its resources, or the power to make decisions within its territory. Operating within the government relations services field, it coordinates governance and policy for its constituents and partners. In February 2026, Squamish announced the development of its own law, Chiy | áxw, to describe how the Nation cares for, supports, and serves its Sḵwx̱wú7mesh children, youth, and families.
