STAIR of Birmingham is a nonprofit organization focused on helping first- through third-grade students become confident, lifelong readers through free, one-on-one after-school tutoring. The program pairs trained volunteers with students across fourteen Birmingham-area schools, using an evidence-based curriculum developed by educators and literacy specialists to build foundational reading skills. Founded in 2000 with a small group of students at Avondale Elementary, STAIR now serves nearly 200 students each year with the support of a broad volunteer network. The organization is based in Birmingham, Alabama. STAIR operates through a community-based model that relies on volunteers to deliver tutoring. In 2020 STAIR partnered with Books-A-Million to support reading proficiency for elementary students while schools were closed. The partnership illustrates collaboration with local partners to extend literacy support beyond after-school sessions.
