Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority is a mid-sized public housing agency serving Stark County, Ohio. Established in 1939, it operates as a political subdivision of the state and is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide subsidized housing and self-sufficiency programs for eligible residents. Guided by a five-member Board of Commissioners and governed by the Ohio Revised Code and HUD regulations, SMHA serves low- and moderate-income families with decent, safe, and sanitary housing and related resident services. Based in Canton, SMHA serves Stark County through partnership-driven housing programs. It seeks to improve neighborhoods by providing housing and resident services to eligible families, while pursuing self-sufficiency initiatives. In March 2025, the authority announced a plan to eliminate 11 managerial positions as part of organizational changes.
