Stephenson County is a local government authority in Illinois that serves residents and local institutions within its 568-square-mile territory. The county is named after Col. Benjamin Stephenson, a War of 1812 officer who helped lead the Illinois Territory and later served in Congress, and it was formally established in 1837. Historically notable, the county was the site of the second Lincoln-Douglas Debate in 1858, and a bronze statue marks that location. It is also identified as the birthplace of Jane Addams, associated with Hull-House and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. As of the 2000 census, the population was about 49,000, placing it among mid-sized local government entities in the United States.
