A forerunner to charter schools, Storefront Academy has been unlocking young minds and expanding the possible for students of all learning abilities for generations. We cultivate intellect and character in equal measure. We nurture. We push. We embrace. Storefront Academy admission is lottery-based, which means that we accept all students, regardless of academic ability or financial means. Founded in 1966 as The Children’s Storefront, Storefront Academy Harlem is a tuition-free private school, educating urban youth of all learning abilities, from pre-k to 8th grade. Storefront Academy Harlem is a member of the Schools That Can national network, is chartered by the New York Department of Education, and is accredited by New York State Association of Independent Schools. In the fall of 2015, Storefront Academy expanded by opening a charter school, Storefront Academy South Bronx, in the Mott Haven neighborhood. Using our Harlem campus as the model to replicate, the school opened with two classes of kindergarteners and two classes of first graders. One grade will be added per year, with the eventual goal of educating students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Storefront Academy South Bronx is chartered by the New York Department of Education and is authorized by SUNY Charter School Institute. Academically demanding yet strategically nurturing in values and life skills, Storefront Academy schools develop students from the inside out to build resilient character, excitement about learning and a powerful sense of self. At Storefront Academy, we are rewriting the rules of urban education for students of all learning abilities, transforming entire communities. Classroom by classroom. Student by student.
