StressCare offers effective, evidence-based, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) training and education to people from all walks of life, whether well or ill, who are experiencing high levels of stress and pain. MBSR is a respected and established stress reduction program developed by world-renowned educator Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, at UMass Medical Center, and is considered a gold standard research tool. StressCare is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Oakland, California, founded by David Weinberg in 1996. StressCare is managed by a Board of Directors comprised of San Francisco Bay Area health care providers. StressCare's key advisor is Jack Edelen, MD, former Head of Cardiology and Chief of Medicine at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. StressCare's key referrers include over 50 health care providers from the Bay Area who recommend MBSR to their patients as essential to overall health care. StressCare's core program is the 8-Week Course for stress reduction and pain management, based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's work. The aim of the course is recovery of self-efficacy, resilience, and well-being in the face of stress, pain, illness, aging and loss.
