Twelve years ago, Summer in the City was born from an idea: three college students from Metro Detroit wanted to create an engaging volunteer experience in the city that was both accessible and rewarding. An experience described with three terms that have become, in a way, the organization’s creed: Fun, Flexible, and Fulfilling. Over time, what began as one carful of volunteers has grown often over 200 a day. By bringing a diverse group of young people together to invest their energy in Detroit, Summer in the City programs address the immediate needs of city neighborhoods while fostering a regional mindset. Through the creation and maintaining of asset-based urban revitalization projects throughout the city of Detroit, SITC aims to incorporate area youth in the city and its future.
