The New Jersey Judiciary, based in Trenton, administers the state's court system as part of the administration of justice. It comprises the Supreme Court, the Superior Court (including the Appellate Division and trial courts in 15 vicinages), the Tax Court, and municipal courts. As a large state judiciary, it relies on the Administrative Office of the Courts to provide technical and operational support, training, budget and personnel coordination, and the development and operation of information systems that sustain court operations. Its primary customers are the public and the legal community who use the courts and seek access to timely information about proceedings. A recent development is the adoption of a merits briefing model for Supreme Court appeals filed after February 10, 2026, reflecting a modernization of how cases are presented to the court.
