The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and enjoying the ocean, waves, and beaches through an activist network. The broader Surfrider Foundation was founded in 1984 and has grown to include more than 50,000 members and over 80 chapters worldwide, with the San Diego County Chapter described as among the largest and most active. The local operation includes permanent staff—a Chapter Manager, a Policy Coordinator, and a Beach Cleanup Coordinator—and a volunteer Executive Committee that serves as the local board. Nine volunteer-led committees coordinate the chapter’s activities across San Diego County’s 72 miles of coastline. Program areas cover Beach Cleanups, Beach Preservation, the Blue Water Task Force, and initiatives addressing plastics, climate change, and sustainable practices such as Ocean Friendly Restaurants and Ocean Friendly Gardens. The chapter invites community involvement to protect and enjoy the coastline, and further information is available at surfridersd.org or by emailing info@surfridersd.org.
