The TAIX family are fourth and fifth generation sheepherders and bakers who came from Haute-Alps in Southeastern France and immigrated to Los Angeles around 1880.
In 1912, Marius Taix Sr. opened the Hotel Champ d’Or at 321 Commercial Street, in what was then the French Quarter of Downtown Los Angeles.
In 1927, his son Marius Taix Jr. opened TAIX Restaurant within the hotel, serving the now famous Roast Chicken Dinner for 50c at “table d’hôte” or “family-style” tables. Once all the seats were filled, service began.  When everyone had enough to eat, service ended.  Private booths were offered for an extra 25c. for those who preferred a more personal setting.
French food was a novelty then in Los Angles.  And with TAIX’s novel food, unique service, and affordable prices, it quickly became an L.A. institution.
Marius Taix Jr. led the way for his sons, Pierre and Raymond, to carry on the tradition of what is now the oldest French restaurant in Los Angeles.
In 1962, the present location, 1911 West Sunset, opened.  “Table d’hôte” service has given way to private booths.  The famed tureen of soup, the French Sourdough Bread, all are still a big part of TAIX.
Still offering affordable elegance, Michael Taix is the third generation to the restaurant.  His passion for both the restaurant and for wine, has resulted in an extensive, award winning, affordable wine list, and a return to more Gallic offerings.  He continues to ensure the character of the restaurant remains truly French, as every successive remodel seeks to restore the original feel of the first location, and continues to make it a destination for both the newer locals and the long-time customers.
