Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is the governing body of Ngāi Tahu, the iwi comprising Ngāi Tahu whānui and the descendants of the five primary hapū of Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Māmoe and Waitaha. Established by the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996, it oversees the tribe’s statutory rights and ensures that the benefits of the Settlement are shared with Ngāi Tahu whānui now and into the future. The organization operates across the South Island through 18 local rūnanga, with an elected representative from each rūnanga forming the national governance structure. Based in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, it coordinates the tribe’s activities and responsibilities as part of its role within the non-profit sector focused on representing a Māori iwi.
