The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is a government-administered pension agency that manages retirement benefits for Texas educators under authority of the Texas Legislature. Its mission is to improve retirement security for Texas educators through prudent investment of trust assets and the delivery of benefits. TRS operates as a defined-benefit plan, with retirement benefits determined by a pre-established formula and funded primarily by member contributions, state contributions, and investment revenues. Founded more than 85 years ago, TRS is the largest public retirement system in Texas by both membership and assets, overseeing about $225 billion in assets; it is the sixth-largest public pension plan in the United States and among the 20 largest in the world. The agency serves over 2.1 million people, including more than 1 million active public and higher education members and over 400,000 retirement recipients and beneficiaries, and it employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people; its address is 4655 Mueller Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
