The Tennessee Theatre, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, opened in 1928 as a movie palace. It underwent a full restoration and renovation completed in 2005 at a cost of about $30 million, converting it into a modern performing arts and entertainment venue. Today the venue hosts dozens of touring productions each year, including Broadway shows. It serves as the home for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Knoxville Opera, and is also rented by other arts organizations, for-profit entities, and private clients. The theatre is operated by the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation, Inc., whose mission is to preserve and operate the Official State Theatre of Tennessee for the enjoyment of Tennesseans and visitors. In 2023, the theatre launched a series titled Pass the Mic: Creating a Stage for Change.
