Texas RioGrande Legal Aid provides free legal services to people who cannot afford an attorney across 68 southwestern counties, including the Texas-Mexico border. Its attorneys handle more than 45 areas of law, addressing matters such as family, employment, housing, education, disaster relief, landlord-tenant disputes, and civil rights. Founded in 1970 to serve poor communities—initially farmworkers in South Texas—the organization has since expanded to cover the entire state and parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Based in Mercedes, Texas, TRLA pursues its mandate through direct representation and community engagement aimed at expanding access to justice. In late 2024, TRLA partnered with the Pride Center of VT and St. Mary's University Law School to offer community clinics assisting with court-ordered name and gender-marker changes.
