The American Association of Bank Directors (AABD) is a small organization based in Washington, DC, operating within the banking sector. It was founded in 1989 during the S&L crisis to represent the information, education, and advocacy needs of individual directors of banks and savings institutions. It is the only banking association in the United States that exclusively serves individual directors rather than their financial institutions. The organization targets bank and savings institution directors, providing information and guidance to support governance and oversight responsibilities. A notable recent development is the July 2023 publication of the second edition of its Practical Handbook on Fair Lending for Bank Directors and Executive Officers, updating the earlier 2016 edition.
