The Communications Network functions as a global community for nonprofit and philanthropic communications professionals, connecting leaders from foundations, nonprofits, and social sector consultancies. It maintains a diverse network of practitioners that includes communicators, storytellers, strategists, designers, researchers, producers, and community builders. Based in Washington, District of Columbia, the organization operates within the civic and social sectors as a global leadership network for nonprofit communications professionals. Founded more than four decades ago by Frank Karel of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, the network was established to help social change leaders improve their work and communicate their efforts. It continues to facilitate connections and knowledge sharing among its members and has announced plans for the inaugural ComNet Global Summit in London in June 2026, drawing foundation and nonprofit communications leaders from the U.S., the U.K., and across Europe.
