The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is an independent public charity in the philanthropic fundraising services sector, established in September 1996 by a steering committee of local civic leaders to gather permanent funds to support the area. It serves the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County, extending to South Boston/Halifax County in Virginia and Caswell County in North Carolina. Its vision is to recognize needs and provide resources to improve the community’s quality of life, while honoring the wishes of donors; its mission is to improve and enrich lives by encouraging donor generosity, managing and distributing resources, and supporting a range of charitable purposes in the region. The foundation returns earnings from endowment funds to the community through grants to nonprofit organizations and scholarships to local graduates.
