The Copyright Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1953 that concentrates on copyright law awareness and education. Based in New York City, it has a nationwide membership of more than a thousand professionals drawn from legal, academic, publishing, and media sectors, and it seeks to foster interest in and advance understanding of copyright law across literature, music, art, theater, motion pictures, television, software, architecture, and other works of authorship, including their distribution through traditional and new media. It serves as a professional forum by organizing national events such as the Brace Lecture and the Annual and Midwinter Meetings, with fifteen regional chapters conducting local programming. It also publishes the Journal of the Copyright Society and presents the Seton Award and the Award for Excellence in Creativity. The organization does not register copyrights or provide legal services, and inquiries should be directed to its office; a recent development notes participation in its 2026 Annual Meeting held in Louisville, Kentucky.
