The Ecology School operates in Maine as an environmental education organization that centers on hands-on learning about science, food, and the environment for people of all ages. It investigates the relationships among living beings and their shared surroundings, with the aim of helping communities adopt sustainable practices that support ecosystems. Its offerings include school overnight and day programs, summer camps, and public programs, all grounded in direct, field-based exploration of local ecosystems and practical models of sustainable farming and living. In 2020 the school relocated to River Bend Farm, a historic 105-acre property along the Saco River, in Maine, expanding capacity and program scope for hands-on exploration of the region’s ecosystems and food systems. The project includes constructing a dormitory and dining commons designed to meet the Living Building Challenge, a standard for sustainable buildings and healthy communities. The Ecology School has strengthened collaborations with Maine outdoor education centers and schools, including partnerships with Sanford Middle School, Chewonki, and Kieve Wavus Education, as part of broader statewide efforts to bring outdoor learning to more students.
