The Foundation for Applied Psychiatric Anthropology is a non-profit organization based in St. Louis, Missouri, focused on integrating ethnographic research with clinical work to improve understanding and treatment of mental illness. Its work centers on promoting collaboration among scholars and practitioners who blend cultural insight with psychiatric practice, using ethnography and mixed-methods approaches to inform mental health understandings broadly defined. The organization comprises three divisions: a research division that connects researchers and practitioners globally, an advocacy and education division that fosters alliances and public-facing initiatives, and a clinical division that offers low-cost psychotherapy and psychiatric services to individuals and families in the St. Louis area. Affiliation with FAPA is free and voluntary, intended to facilitate networking among those interested in culture and mental health. The foundation was established in 2008 by a psychiatrist and an anthropologist and continues to operate with a mission to serve as a nexus for research, practice, and advocacy in this field.
