The Garden by Equal Play

The Garden by Equal Play is a policy-driven project designed to reduce maternal attrition in the workplace and make modern parenting a more joyful and less stressful experience for parents. 

Our pilot site - a coworking space for parents in San Mateo, California - is called The Garden. Characterized by biophilic, quiet, and amenity-rich office spaces plus nurturing, compassionate childcare in the light-filled building, parents who choose The Garden are able to work intensely, ambitiously, and free of distraction. They are also able to pause in their work to nurse, pump, rest, or have lunch with their children. 

Combining childcare and workspace in the same building also eliminates one of the seminal headaches in the life of the working parent: battling traffic between daycare drop-off and a busy morning. This consolidated experience has significant social and environmental impacts on users, their families, and the community: workers have increased productivity and more time with children. 

Children have happier days, feeling more connected with their parents and receiving excellent care. Less time in the car means less traffic, more time at home, more time with family, and less air pollution.
