The GW Hatchet is an editorially and financially independent newspaper that serves The George Washington University community in downtown Washington, D.C. Founded in 1904, it is the second oldest newspaper in the city. Operating within the newspaper publishing industry, it delivers campus-focused news and commentary to GW students, faculty, and staff. Hatchet Publications, Inc., a standalone nonprofit, produces the paper and is headquartered in a townhouse at 609 21st St NW in Foggy Bottom. The Hatchet has earned industry recognition, including SPJ regional awards and Pacemaker honors, and counts five Pulitzer Prize–winning alumni among its graduates; in 2022 it was named the best college newspaper in its region.
