The Honeynet Project is an international nonprofit research organization founded in 1999 with the goal of improving Internet security at no cost to the public. It is based in Naperville, Illinois, and operates through chapters worldwide, with volunteers who participate in open-source–style collaboration. The organization sits in the research services field, providing threat-focused information and practical tools to support security work. Its work centers on three pillars: awareness of current threats and vulnerabilities; providing in-depth information about attacker motives, tactics, and behavior; and offering tools to support ongoing threat research. These resources are aimed at individuals and organizations looking to understand targets, bolster defenses, or carry out their own investigations through published papers, whitepapers, and a dedicated tools site. In 2021, Ali Ikinci was appointed chief executive officer, marking a notable leadership development for the organization.
