The Hunt Institute is a mid-sized nonprofit operating in the public policy arena, focused on transforming public education and shaping policy to benefit children. It serves as a strategic catalyst, bringing together the right people and resources to support critical dialogue and mobilize action on education issues. Its work targets elected officials and policymakers with the aim of informing decisions that improve children’s lives through quality education. The organization is based in Cary, North Carolina, and was founded in 2001 in honor of former governor James B. Hunt, Jr. In 2016 it became an independent nonprofit and joined with Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy to pursue research, educational partnerships, and events related to education policy. In recent years it has expanded its activities through policy-focused events, including hosting its 2nd Annual New Mexico Legislators Retreat in Albuquerque in 2026.
