The Law Society of Northern Ireland is a professional body established by Royal Charter in 1922 whose purpose is to regulate the solicitors' profession in Northern Ireland with the aim of protecting the public. Under the Solicitors (Northern Ireland) Order 1976, it serves as the regulatory authority for education, accounts, discipline and professional conduct of solicitors to maintain independence, ethical standards, professional competence and the quality of legal services available to the public. The Society operates through an elected Council of thirty practicing solicitors who serve on a voluntary basis, and it employs qualified solicitors and chartered accountants to carry out its administrative and regulatory functions. Its duties include issuing Practising Certificates to solicitors and maintaining a dedicated department to handle client complaints, in addition to contributing to draft legislation and publishing a periodical called The Writ.
