The National Jazz Museum in Harlem preserves, promotes, and presents jazz through live performances, exhibitions, educational workshops, and an archival collection of jazz artifacts, with the aim of deepening knowledge, appreciation, and celebration of the genre for audiences at local, national, and international levels. It engages a diverse audience—young and old, novices and scholars, artists and patrons—in keeping jazz relevant and accessible to a wide range of listeners. Based in Harlem, New York, the institution functions as a cultural center that offers programs and operates a Visitors Center in Harlem. Founded in 1997 by Leonard Garment, the museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, linking it to a broader network of national cultural institutions. In August 2023, it partnered with the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute and the Friends of Art Park Alliance to present the Afribembé Festival in Harlem, illustrating collaborative programming to reach new audiences.
