The Open University of Israel is a higher education institution that emphasizes flexible, open-access learning. Undergraduate study is open to individuals who wish to study a single course, a series of courses, or pursue a full Bachelor’s degree, with no requirement for matriculation or prior scholastic achievements; admission to graduate programs is contingent on meeting defined requirements. The university structures its studies around individual courses rather than traditional faculties or departments, and students progress at their own pace, combining self-study with group learning and the need to meet course deadlines. Since 1996, it has offered programs leading to a Master’s degree, expanding its graduate offerings within a flexible framework. Based in Illinois, United States, the institution maintains a sizeable workforce and an active research footprint. In June 2026, Paz Beniamini, affiliated with the Open University, received the Blavatnik Award—the first time the institution has earned this honor—highlighting its research community and astrophysics program.
