The Public Theater is a nonprofit performing arts organization located in New York City with a history spanning more than six decades. It pursues the view that theater is a vital cultural force and that access to art and culture should be broad, not exclusive. Led by Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, its programming spans an annual season at its Astor Place home, Free Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, a Mobile Unit touring the five boroughs, as well as initiatives such as Public Works, the Public Shakespeare Initiative, and Joe's Pub. The organization has helped shape contemporary American theater, with productions reaching regional stages and audiences abroad, including a Broadway presence through the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton. Its work has been recognized with a wide range of honors, including Tony Awards and Obie Awards along with multiple Drama Desk, Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, AUDELCO, Antonyo, and Pulitzer Prizes. In 2026 it partnered with the New York Public Library to launch a Big Summer Book Club.
