The Seamen's Church Institute (SCI) is North America’s largest and most comprehensive agency for mariners and seafarer services, with a history dating to 1834 and an Episcopal Church affiliation that is interfaith and inclusive in practice. It operates chaplaincy programs that visit thousands of vessels in the Port of New York and New Jersey and along 2,200 miles of inland waterways extending to the Gulf of Mexico. SCI also runs maritime education facilities that provide navigational training to mariners annually through online learning and simulator-based programs in Houston, TX, and Paducah, KY, and its maritime attorneys are recognized as leading advocates by U.S. and international authorities. The organization serves blue-water and brown-water mariners and seafarers, offering spiritual support, legal assistance, and education within the maritime transportation sector, and is based in New York City, with training sites in Texas and Kentucky. In 2023, SCI expanded its team of full-time chaplains with the appointment of Rev. Christine Brunson to serve in the Houston area.
