The Shea Center is a non-profit organization based in San Juan Capistrano, California, delivering therapeutic riding and related therapies. It began in 1978 as The Orange County Riding Center, established by Nancy and Derek Lewis for their son who has cerebral palsy, and was later renamed to honor notable contributors. In 2001, after a land donation for a permanent facility, the center was renamed J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center and earned premier-level accreditation from PATH Intl. Its program serves more than 1,200 participants each year and relies on 23 horses and more than 800 community volunteers to provide services across physical, occupational, and speech therapies addressing more than 75 disabilities. The center's facilities include two covered arenas, one open arena, a forty-stall barn, two round pens, and a farrier and veterinarian area with riding trails, supported by a staff of full-time and contract personnel, and it maintains ongoing collaborations such as a partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority to train firefighters in large-animal rescue.
