We teach cooking as a practical skill for health. Many of the communities we serve face high rates of diet-related illness, limited access to fresh food, and little or no food education in schools. We work in communities where food education is often missing and access to affordable, fresh food can be limited. In our programs, students cook plant-based recipes, learn knife skills and kitchen safety, and explore how food connects to culture and health. We partner with schools, community organizations, and farms to deliver plant-forward cooking and nutrition education where it’s needed most—helping young people and families build skills they can use every day. Our Teen Culinary Apprenticeship provides paid, career-focused training in culinary education and local food systems, and our family programs offer free meal kits and guided cooking classes that make healthy eating more accessible. Founded in 2007, The Sylvia Center now reaches thousands of participants each year across New York, helping close the gap between food access and food education.
